Christmas Trees

Christmas Trees

Don’t forget the late fall and winter holiday season. While you are visiting, get your Christmas tree at one of the many Choose ‘n Cut farms in the area. Here’s the brochure from the Ashe County Christmas Tree Association.
Ashe County Festivals

Ashe County Festivals

Ashe County is home to many festivals from the annual Christmas in July (shown here) to Fiddlers Convention (end of July) to the Antique Fair (in September). The Todd community hosts music events, we have the Blue Ridge Brutal Bike Race, the New River Marathon and so much more. Check the
Ashe Chamber Calendar for all the events.
Wildlife

Wildlife

Keep your eyes open, as you’ll be surprised how many animals you see, like this barred owl we saw perched in a tree along Buffalo Road. We have turkeys, deer and bear, plus ground hogs, raccoons, and just about everything else you can think of. And if you love birds, we hope you spot a Pileated Woodpecker or a Kingfisher, or get to hear the Canadian geese as they fly along the river. And if you are really lucky, you’ll spot a bobcat.
The New River

The New River

The New River is central to life in the county. The North and South forks meander through great portions of Ashe County. From fishing to floating, kayaking and canoeing, most every weekend folks flock to the river. Several outfitters can set you up with tubes and boats and fishing gear. Ask us for recommendations.
New River Visitors Center

New River Visitors Center

The New River Visitors Center is open 7 days a week. The Center’s Exhibit Hall and Park’s interpretive programs are interesting for all ages.
Virginia Creeper Bike Trail

Virginia Creeper Bike Trail

The Virginia Creeper Bike Trail is thirty-four miles long, the bike trail runs from White Top, VA (just over the county line) to Abingdon, VA (home to the famous Barter Theatre). We like a stretch in the middle near Damascus. Downloadable VA Creeper Trail Map.
Quilt Show

Quilt Show

This area is home to many quilters, who create art with fabric. Check out our Facebook pages or the Ashe Chamber Calendar for dates.
Ashe County History

Ashe County History

On good weather days, head to the Parkway and stop at milepost 238 where you’ll meet Martin & Caroline Brinegar, whose cabin still stands. Spend time with a park ranger on duty at the cabin, and you’ll learn about subsistence farming and survival in the mountains.

A great rainy day adventure is a visit to the Museum of Ashe County History. Make sure to check out the diorama the length of a room, and made by local artists.
